Quarters

2022

Red oxide, ash and charcoal on gesso, mod roc
23 x 15 approx. cm

A quarter could be a mathematical proportion, a living space, a unit of money or the standard way of dividing a slaughtered animal carcass.

‘Quarters’ is made from a face cast of myself after realizing my head is almost 25cm in height, the size restriction of the exhibition. The upper half of the head is coated in ash ground with water and the lower half is red oxide ground with linseed oil.

Ash is made from burning wood. Iron oxide is a compound found in the earth and in our blood. Ash can symbolise our destruction of nature and iron oxide our connection to it. Together these elements might suggest self-destruction or division and conflict.
